![]() In time, she won a place at Caltech… where she once again found herself a social outsider and a marked oddity, though now she was also blessed with the freedom to embrace being a ‘freak’ as a positive thing in which she could take real pride. ![]() Fortunately, she proved to have a real gift for computers and for languages - both analogue and digital - and readily picked up both ASL and a growing range of codebases. Still, she struggled to cope with the social changes imposed by her new condition, and increasingly found refuge in the burgeoning field of home computing. Taken in by her grandparents, she remained protected and supported.
